The Changing Face of Retirement
Retirement is being
dramatically redefined...and reinvented.
What is happening?
The Boomers and their
immediate predecessors are living much longer and much healthier
lives. Statistically speaking, at age 50 people now
have at least half of their adult lives left to liveand
then some. People are calling 60 the new 40. This is the first
time in history that a generation has had this kind of bonus time
and
society is not yet prepared for all the contributions it can make.
The old definitions
of retirement no longer work. Many people need to work well into
traditional retirement age. According to AARP,
the Boomers desireand
expectto work during
this time. But they, in their pioneering style, want to do it
differently; they want to design their lives in their
own termsincorporating work,
volunteerism, family, learning, self-care, and leisureabove
all, staying active and engaged in their own lives and the lives
of their communities. Its no longer a world of full-time
work or total retirement.
What is the Third Age?
Many who study phases
of adult development call this time of life The Third Age. This
age follows the first phase of adulthood (the Second Age), when
establishing career and family are primary. Typically the Third
Age is characterized by a major redefinition of roles in the areas
of work, family, leisure, and "giving back". The driving
ambitions of youth have eased, giving way to a focus on understanding
life and devoting oneself more to what really matters. Creativity,
spirituality, and individuality increase.
A very fascinating time
a time of challenging
and exciting transition.

"The first age is a long period of growing up. The
second age is organized around productivity (jobs, incomes,
adult challenges) and settling in (family, organizations,
community). The third age, the longest of the periods, has
the potential for self-actualization. I see the third age
transforming everything we previously imagined about the
second half of life. That is why we should prepare to take
off, with anticipation and hope,"
~William A. Sadler, Ph.D.
